BK-WTS Thermal Energy Storage – Less Gas, More Stable District Heating Operations
One solution is the BK-WTS hot water thermal energy storage system from BIKO TECH.
During periods of lower heat demand, the WR boiler operates steadily and charges the thermal storage unit. During peak periods, the stored heat is fed into the district heating network, reducing or eliminating the need to operate the gas-fired peak-load boiler.
The largest standard BK-WTS-200 model offers:
- 8.6 MWh of thermal storage capacity
- 2 MW of thermal output
- Approximately 4.3 hours of operation at full output
Key benefits for district heating plants include:
- Reduced gas consumption and fewer start-ups of the peak-load boiler
- More stable operation of WR boilers
- Improved efficiency of the base-load heat source
- The ability to store surplus heat from CHP plants, biomass systems, heat pumps or electric boilers
- Full off-site prefabrication of the storage tank at BIKO TECH’s manufacturing facility
- Scalable installations through the parallel connection of additional modules
Depending on the plant’s operating profile, fuel prices and number of storage cycles, the indicative simple payback period may be approximately 6–10 years for district heating plants covered by the EU Emissions Trading System (ETS) and around 3.5–5.5 years for installations outside the ETS.
Store heat when it is cheapest to produce.
Use it when it is needed most.
